EC Gazette – March 2024

The Lenten season traditionally begins on Ash Wednesday as we mark the journey of contemplation and fasting. This Lent, we are inviting our congregation to engage in an intentional season of mission and service.

Be the Sheep: Worship
We continue our Lenten series based on Jesus’ words in Matthew 25, seeking to feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, and visit the sick and imprisoned. By serving the least among us, we serve our Savior and answer the call to Be the Sheep. Join us each Sunday morning in March for more participatory worship as we hear the word of God and then live it out together!

Gift Card Challenge
The East Cobb UMC Pastor’s Benevolence Fund recently received a needed update to reflect the current needs of our community and the church’s ability to address those needs. The new policy was approved by Administrative Council and can be viewed on our website.

As part of the update, we plan to have a collection of Kroger gift cards that can be used to purchase food and gas for folks in need. Help us build this collection by purchasing $20 Kroger gift cards and donating them to the Pastor’s Benevolence Fund. A collection box will be in the Narthex beginning Sunday, March 3.

We have set a goal of 50 gift cards, and we will keep track of our progress by adding sheep to our pasture. With every gift card you donate, please add a paper sheep to our display in the Narthex. Together, we will be the sheep in our community. We are wooly thankful for ewe!

Bible Sunday and Bible Retreat
Sunday, March 24
It is tradition in our church to gift the 3rd graders a new Bible to mark a transition in their faith journey. As their reading levels increase, they move from a storybook bible to a full translation of our holy scriptures. This year, we will celebrate Bible Sunday on March 24. In addition to our 3rd graders, we will also gift our rising Confirmands with a new Bible that they will use for their confirmation journey. Following worship, we will host a special “Bible Retreat,” to help us all engage in a more meaningful way with our bibles. Save the Date now, and registration will begin March 1. If you have a child in 3rd grade or higher that has not received a bible, please contact Pastor Kristin.

Justified: Youth Study
Anger is such a big, powerful emotion. When we’re angry about things that matter, our anger can lead us toward action. Anger can even inspire us to make the world a better place! But other times, our anger can lead us to make choices that are harmful to ourselves or others. There’s no escaping situations or people who make us angry, but how we respond when we’re angry is up to us.

So if we can’t completely avoid getting angry, what can we do? In this four-week series, we’ll explore four passages of Scripture from both the Old and New Testaments that might challenge our view on anger. We’ll learn practical skills like when we feel angry, pause to ask God why. We’ll see how, when we’re angry, Jesus shows us how to respond. And in our anger, we’ll be challenged to show grace and not get hurtful.
